Glamour of Hollywood - February 1940

These historical items are presented as originally created. They may contain attitudes, language, or cultural depictions that were once commonplace in society, but have always been erroneous and wrong.

Glamour magazine got it's start in 1939 as Glamour of Hollywood. Published by Condé Nast, it's first issue, April 1939, hit news stands on March 3rd of that year. At that time this new magazine billed itself as The Hollywood Way to Fashion, Beauty, Charm and was a fashion and lifestyle magazine focused on the Hollywood stars of the day. However, the association with Hollywood and it's stars didn't last long. With the May 1941 issue the magazine's name changed simply to, Glamour, with the tag line For Young Women - The Way to Fashion, Beauty, and Charm. The August 1943 issue saw another change to the magazine's tag line which became, For the Girl with a Job.

With it's inclusion of Katiti Kironde on the cover of it's College Issue in August 1968, Glamour was the first women's magazine to feature an African-American cover girl. The number that featured Kironde on the cover remains Glamour's best-selling issue. In November 2018 Condé Nast announced that it was  ending regular print publication of Glamour and switching to an online only presence. January 2019 was the magazine's final, regularly published print issue.

Similar to its Condé Nast sister publication, Vogue, Glamour also featured some of the newly released sewing patterns of the day. In this case it was the Hollywood Patterns line, which was started by Nast in 1933. This February 1940 issue has four pages of Hollywood Designs of the Month which I will be sure to share with you in the future.
