Black Pearl Sings [2018]
Today we have a couple of items from my portfolio that fit in with yesterday's 1930s themed post.
A silk velvet dress worn by Colleen Madden as the character Susannah
and a rayon print dress worn by Lynette DuPree as Pearl in Milwaukee
Repertory Theater's production of Black Pearl Sings. Directed by Leda
Hoffmann with costumes designed by Lauren Roark, the show ran from
January 19 through March 18, 2018 in the Rep's Stackner Cabaret.

The Library of Congress summarizes the show nicely, "Black Pearl Sings! is set in Depression-era Texas and imagines a meeting between a white musicologist from the Library of Congress and a jailed African American woman with a soulful voice and steely spirit. This is an evocative story of how they must work together to fulfill the goals of both women."
Our team in the Costume Shop consisted of Alex Tecoma as Draper, me as First Hand, and Carol Ross as Stitcher. Carol stitched Ms. Dupree's print dress and I stitched Ms. Madden's velvet gown.
The dress worn by Ms. Madden is constructed of a hand painted, purple silk velvet. It closes at the center back with a hand picked zipper, the sleeves are lined in a mocha color silk charmeuse. The dress also has decorative self fabric covered buttons at the shoulders and down the sleeves, a self belt with covered buckle completes the look. Ms. Dupree's frock is constructed of a rayon crepe that was custom printed for this show. Closing at center back with a zipper, it also features a self fabric belt and covered buckle. The buckle is vintage and was re-covered for this costume.

Remaining photos taken by me in the costume shop. I apologize for the poor quality of my pics, they are all I have and were taken hastily during tech of the show. I think the hem of the velvet dress is still basted in my photos.
