A Little Night Music [2012]

Here is another item from my portfolio of professional work. A ballgown worn by Shannon Cochran as the character Desirée in A Little Night Music at Writers' Theatre in Glencoe, IL. Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by Hugh Wheeler, this production was directed by William Brown with musical direction by Valerie Maze. The show ran from May 1 - August 12, 2012 in Writers' 312 Tudor Court space. Rachel Anne Healy designed the costumes.

A synopsis from the Writers' Theatre website, "Set in turn of the century Sweden, A Little Night Music is a sumptuous musical celebration of love. Desirée Armfeldt has always captured the hearts of men. When both of her lovers—and their wives—show up for a weekend in the country, the boundless possibilities of an old romance and newly awakened passions bring endless surprises." https://www.writerstheatre.org/a-little-night-music

The Costume Production team for this garment was comprised of Alex Tecoma as Draper and me as both First Hand and Stitcher.

This gown is constructed from a lovely rayon brocade in shades of green, blue and black. The sprial boned bodice is flat lined in black cotton coutil with the top edge piped in self fabric and the bottom edge finished with a facing of black bias; non-enclosed edges are serged. The bodice closes at center back with a zipper that is both machine stitched and hand picked. There is a ruched net detail on the bodice front that continues to the center back. The same net detail is also seen on the shoulders/sleeve area. Tan elastic cord runs through the net, this was to help keep the sleeve in place on Ms. Cochran's arm. Not pictured in these photographs are the jet beads that were applied to the sleeve netting. The skirt is fully lined in a  black rayon lining fabric with a ruffle at the hem of the lining. The skirt is attached to the bodice with a catch stitch. This ballgown was worn over a 1905 silhouette corset and a black cotton sateen petticoat that had a small built in bustle at the center back waist.
